Lead 21 In Our Classroom

Lead 21 is our reading program that we will follow this year.  It is a guide to what our first grade team will be teaching for the Common Core Standards. 

We are on week 4 of Unit 6.   This  theme is titled Nature's Homes.  

Word Study

Using text evidence to set the purpose for reading:  Gather evidence from non fiction books and other resources to emphasize the focus question.  "What do plants and animals need to survive?" (look for kew words in the text:  plants, animals, survive, etc.

Use descriptive language

Making predictions as we read to guide our thoughts 
Determine the Author's Purpose. "Why does the author want me to read this?" "Is there a lesson I could learn?"
Understanding the Plot:  Identifying the problem the main character faces and the solution.

Vocabulary
citizen:  is a person who is a member of a country or a community
laws:  rules that people must follow and are enforced

protects:  keeps safe from danger

You will hear the following terminology used throughout the year in Language Arts. Here is a brief description of what each category consists of.

Shared Reading: Interactive time as a whole class. We focus on specific skills through poems and interactive books to enhance learning and confidence.

Guided Reading: Small groups working with Miss Hergenrider focusing on specific skills at your child's individual reading level.

Centers: Individual work and interactive games to re-enforce skills previously learned in class.
